What Employers Want Now: Insights from Indeed’s Marketing Leader
Plus: a marketer’s job search success story, and the top business trends shaping Canada.

Hey friend,
If you’ve been job hunting, you know it’s been rough. Michelle Slater, Indeed’s Senior Director of Marketing for the Americas and Global Partnerships, sat down with SocialNext President Mike Morrison to talk about what’s really going on and how marketers can give themselves an edge.
Coming Up
Job Market at a Crossroads
Marketing jobs in Canada have dropped by 60% since 2020. Employers hold the cards right now, moving slowly and often unsure of what they want. Meanwhile, candidates feel the squeeze.
“It’s more of an employer’s market right now, where there’s a lot of great talent out there and it’s getting to be a little bit more challenging for marketers to find really great work.”
— Michelle Slater
How to Actually Stand Out
Slater didn’t mince words: stop sending generic resumes. Read the job posting carefully, match the skills and keywords, and focus on impact.
“We see a lot of resumes that are just like, okay, I don’t really understand what you did there… focus on the impact. What did you change?”
She also looks for the intangibles: adaptability, communication, leadership. Side projects, volunteering, even hobbies, they all tell a story about how you’ll show up on the job.
Why Curiosity Still Wins
Yes, AI tools like Indeed’s Career Scout can help you surface transferable skills. But Slater warned against leaning too hard on automation.
“Employers are already overwhelmed by stacks of resumes that look and read the same.”
Translation: let AI polish, but make sure your real voice comes through.
Hybrid, Remote, and the Office Advantage
About 30% of marketing roles are now hybrid or remote. Slater noted that while experienced professionals can thrive in hybrid setups, newcomers benefit from being in the office, where mentorship and informal learning happen daily.
Keep Learning, Keep Growing
Slater closed with a reminder every marketer should take seriously: stay curious.
“Curiosity and adaptability are the most valuable traits right now. If you’re not continuously learning, you’re falling behind—and employers can tell.”
Courses, side projects, community webinars, whatever it is, showing growth signals you’re ready for more.

Active Job Seeker Turned Newly Employed: Advice from Nupur Mittal
Landing a marketing role today isn’t easy, but Nupur Mittal, SocialNext Marketing Alliance member and now Content Marketing Specialist at Baselane, proves persistence pays off.

Instead of sending hundreds of applications, she focused on a shortlist of SaaS companies she admired.
“I prioritized quality over volume… I followed marketing folks at those companies, learned what they cared about, and asked for warm referrals when the timing was right.”
She also shared her job search openly on LinkedIn. While her posts and coffee chats didn’t directly land offers, they helped her build visibility.
“Someone I’d reached out to passed my name to the hiring manager at my current company. That was the step through the front door I needed.”
It wasn’t always easy.
“There were days when all hope would wear off… that’s when I leaned on my family and best friends for strength.”
Her advice for other marketers:
“Put yourself out there. Tell your story on LinkedIn, go to events, and start a mini project you can talk about in interviews. That’s what worked for me.”
